Historic moments...

Lindberghparade

With the excitement of this special Inauguration Day approaching, my thoughts have turned to other historic moments I've heard about and witnessed.

My maternal grandfather was four years old when Halley's Comet came by in 1910.  One of his earliest and fondest memories was of watching Halley's Comet with his mother from the front room window of their house on Linwood Ave. in Abington, Massachusetts.  You could still sense how much it meant to him, remembering that time with his mother when the comet came by again in 1986.

One of my father's special memories was of sitting on his father's shoulders and watching New York City's first ticker tape parade, in honor of Charles Lindbergh, after his return from his historic transatlantic flight.  Dad was five years old that day, 13 June 1927, and he and his father were among the estimated 3 to 4 million people lined up along Fifth Avenue from Battery Park to Central Park.  The New York Times wrote "Never was America prouder of a son."  What a thrill it was for a little fellow to catch a glimpse of his hero!

On July 20, 1969, when the first men landed on the moon, my maternal grandparents were watching it on television in the loft of their barn, which was fixed up as a place for us to stay while visiting them in the summer, with my parents and my sister and me.  Grandmother, with a twinkle in her eye, clued me in that some day I too would be old and wrinkled and would be telling my own grandchildren about this historic moment.  I was twelve years old.

No doubt many of us will have similar memories of this coming historic moment...

this was my favourite blog of today.  I really enjoyed reading about each event.
You described each one so wonderfully.  I wanted to be in that barn loft too.  How neat.  But I was in the maternity ward, watching the moon landing on TV and holding my newborn baby Catherine, born on July 18th, 1969.   All the new mothers and nurses were gathered around a small black and white TV watching this unbelievable event.
Your grandmother was right.  I am now the grandmother ;>)
Catherine will be 40 years old this July.

Barbara,

I want to publicly express my gratitude for this blog and to those who participated with you here. I read it a few days ago and pondered upon it silently. In those moments, I made the decision to keep my kids home from school on January 20th, 2009.

It was a remarkable day on so many levels for us. Remarkable for what we were witnessing but also for us a family. The day in itself created an abundance of opportunities for so much dialogue. A dialogue we are continuing.

I will not forget yesterday nor will they and I am so happy to have had them with me to witness such an historic moment and for you and your company as a gentle reminder…

Thank you and sincerely so…

Meenakshi, I enjoyed looking at the “I know where I was when I heard about..” discussion - thanks for pointing me there!

mimi, Thanks for your kind words! Catherine’s children must love knowing where their mom was, safe in her own mother’s arms, when the first man walked on the moon! What a wonderful memory…

Denim, Thank you, too, for your kind words! I am so happy that you were together with your family sharing such a meaningful and memorable experience with them on Inauguration day.

I feel so connected to all of you! Reading your stories warmed my heart more than you know…

Tim and I were visiting Liz in Florida. Tim’s dearly loved stepdad, Erik, died December 17 of cancer, and Liz is his widow. Erik had been thrilled to have lived long enough to see Obama elected president, so we were missing him very much. But Liz brought out a picture of him and placed it on a table facing the TV and we all then felt Erik was there with us in spirit watching the Inauguration as the day’s events unfolded. We were impressed with how many people all over the earth were also watching on TV. Amazing.
